During Term 3, Grade 1/2 students had been doing research into Victorian wildlife and habitats. They talked about animal classes (mammals, reptiles, fish, etc) and the difference between animals that are native, introduced, pests or feral.

Our class was contacted by Ms. Stack and Grade 2 at Kamehameha Elementary School in Hilo, Hawaii (big island), USA. The two classes decided they could share what they knew about the animals in each country. On the last day of term, the two classes talked for a whole hour!

One of the things I learnt was that the state fish of Hawaii is called humuhumunukunukupua and it has blue teeth.

To check out a video from our conference with Hawaii, go to Ms. Stack’s Technology Blog. You can even read what they thought about talking to us. Thank you so much for sharing all about Hawaiian animals. I hope we will talk again but in the meantime, I wish them good luck with the mongoose problem!

It is tough making good pieces of art. The artists have to stick with their idea for weeks and weeks, working away at them until eventually the artwork is done. When you’re in primary school, you also have to thank the keen and amazing parents who come in week after week to help you learn the new craft skills. None of this is super easy – but you end up with some great stuff at the end…

Today the Grade 1/2 students will be finishing the collages that they have been making for the Kyneton Show & Royal Melbourne Show. Before people finish, have a quick look at a photo from the very beginning. When nobody had started, students’ boards looked like this.

Please comment to share how your artwork has changed. Maybe some of the fantastic craft parents will get to read your comment too!

Foxes are a disaster to native wildlife in Australia, so our grade does not want Jingo any more. We have chosen a new pet which is a native Australian animal, a penguin. Bunnyherolabs.com does not have very many distinctive Australian pets to adopt. If you want to suggest some Aussie animals for them to make you should go and write to them here.

Our penguin really needs a name. Please write a comment with your name idea so the penguin can have a name!
